This large red and natural sturdy fruit bowl is beautifully woven from sisal fibers and sweet grass grown naturally in Rwanda and measures 11 ½” across and 3” high. The new basket is made by Anastasia Mukeshimana, who is 22 years old and who lives in Mpanda Village, Rwanda. She was unable to attend school because she had to stay home to care for her younger siblings – two brothers and three sisters. Three of them are still in school. Weaving for the Rwanda Partners Basket Company gives her a source of income to purchase medical insurance, clothes, and school fees and supplies for her siblings. She hopes to pay for repairs for their home if she sells enough baskets.

This large red and natural sturdy fruit bowl is beautifully woven from sisal fibers and sweet grass grown naturally in Rwanda and measures 11 ½” across and 3” high.
The new basket is made by Anastasia Mukeshimana, who is 22 years old and who lives in Mpanda Village, Rwanda. She was unable to attend school because she had to stay home to care for her younger siblings – two brothers and three sisters. Three of them are still in school.
Weaving for the Rwanda Partners Basket Company (a poverty-reduction program working with impoverished weavers in Rwanda to provide them with tools, training and support) gives her a source of income to purchase medical insurance, clothes, and school fees and supplies for her siblings. She hopes to pay for repairs for their home if she sells enough baskets. Weaving these beautiful one-of-a-kind baskets is an intricate and time-consuming process that requires much attention to detail on the part of each weaver. These baskets are made from natural raw materials that can be found growing in Rwanda – sisal fibers, sweet grass, banana leaves and raffia. Dyed with either natural plant pigments or tea leaves as well as with commercial dyes, these baskets represent designs that have been woven in many cases for centuries.
I discovered these beautiful baskets and had difficulty choosing; they were all so beautiful. I hope you like my selection. Each basket has an attached card with the weaver’s name and story.
