    Birthstone for September Hardness 9.0.
Sapphire is often considered to be synonymous with the color blue. However, sapphire comes in every color but red. Red is called ruby. The other colors of sapphire can be just as beautiful and rare. Or even more rare than blue. Some are even considered to be collectors items. However, they are usually priced less. Yellow, orange, lavender, and other pastel shades are especially affordable.
Sapphires are found in a variety of colors. The reddish colors are called ruby. People generally think of sapphires as blue in color, although they are also colorless, pink, orange, green, golden, yellow, purple and black. Sapphire is the birthstone of the month of September. Red sapphires are known as ruby, and pinkish orange sapphire as padparadscha.
    Enhancements
Sapphire is always heat treated to produce, intensify or lighten color and/or improve color uniformity and appearance. Heat treatment of sapphires is performed at the sapphire mines, and is a industry-wide accepted practice. We have had a lot of requests for untreated sapphires, but they don't exist. Unless you dig it out of the ground yourself, always assume that any sapphire is heat treated.
The cost of natural sapphire varies depending on their color, clarity, size, cut, and overall quality as well as geographic origin. Significant sapphire deposits are found in Eastern Australia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, East Africa and in the United States at various locations (Gem Mountain) and in the Missouri River near Helena, Montana. Sapphire and rubies are often found together in the same area, but one gem is usually more abundant.
Both rubies and sapphires owe their intense colors to impurities, ruby to the presence of chromium, and blue sapphire to both titanium and iron. In rubies, the color can be explained by crystal field theory, but in sapphire, a slightly different process, known as charge transfer, produces the color blue.
Although sapphires are found in various parts of the world, not all regions produce the colors that are highly valued. For example, Australia is a dominant producer of sapphires, but these stones are considered less valuable due to their very dark color. Fine quality sapphires are produced in Southeast Asia, with those from Sri Lanka often having the sought-after cornflower blue color.
