    Description

Chinese Ceramic Stump Brush Pot Holder or Washer Ox Mud Figures Playing Game
This unusual old ceramic piece is in the form of a stump. At it's base are  a black ox with a mud figure seated on his back playing a flute. Two other mud figures are seated on the ground playing a board game.  The piece is 2 3/4 inches at the highest point and 5 5/8 inches across the bottom. the stump forms one container that is separated by a little bridge of clay at the top. My best guess is that this container is intended to wash brushes or to hold brushes or pencils. Chinese brush pots are most often plain cylinders that are taller than this stump container, and they rarely have a complex scene with figures like these attached. Washers seem to come in more varied shapes.
The figure on the ox is missing a foot and has some flakes of clay on the back of his head.
There's space under the ox and rough bits of clay next to the game board which appear to be firing flaws. There are also some tiny lumps of clay on the inside of the stump. An unusual and striking pot!
